Halloween is right around the corner and with it, trick-or-treating.  Review these tips to enjoy a happy and safe trick-or-treating experience.

Most trick-or-treating takes place between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. so be extra alert when operating an automobile.  Be sure to turn your headlights on earlier than normal as well.  Decorating your lawn, front doorway, and windows can be one of the best parts of Halloween, but be sure to keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains.  A better alternative is a stable surface where they are out of reach from pets or small children.

As for the trick-or-treating itself, plan a route in advance so members of the family will know where their trick-or-treaters will be.

They say the shoes make the outfit, but consider opting for comfort over fashion if you’ll be trekking it around the neighborhood.

Consider using reflective tape on your bag and costume so drivers will can easily identify you.

The costume is what makes Halloween.  You’ve probably thought long and hard about what to be this year and landed on the perfect idea. Just consider keeping it short so as not to trip over loose hanging garments.

Part of the costume may or may not be a mask. Masks are a staple of Halloween but make sure it’s not too tight so your little trick-or-treater can easily see and breathe.

If your costume has props and accessories, make sure they are soft and flexible.

Lastly, the candy – it’s what makes Halloween special.  Be sure to check the haul for candy not in its original wrapper or signs of tampering.  It might also be wise to avoid the homemade treats from strangers.
